I am quite taken with filigree at the moment!

I've used up my first length of filigree wire, and have started a second. (Wire is twisted, then run through the rolling mill to flatten it slightly, having been annealed between these steps.) I have the large motifs, 2 each, for a pair of Norwegian-inspired earrings done, and the rest of the wire for them is formed. This is the first project in the book, and I was sensible and started with it. I also have most of the pieces cut and half of them formed for a 5-pointed star- the book's second project. I think that's where I'll stop making projects from the book, and start to design my own uses for the stuff, probably combining it with plique.

The mokume game proceeds apace. I got 2 rollings done on it today, and now the billets are just over 5mm thick. I seem to be taking them down about 0.3mm per pass, which isn't bad. My rolling mill is cross with me, though. I hope that as they get thinner, it'll be happier!

Filigree cylindical container

We're watching the anime xxxHolic right now, and one of the episodes we watched yesterday featured a metal cylindrical container, decorated with filigree. With a string, a tube is fastened into the container, and when the string is untied, the tube slides out of the cylinder.

When I saw it, I thought by myself: "This is something [livejournal.com profile] afmetalsmith has to see!"

I found some screenshots over here (http://www.designchronicle.com/memento/archives/xxxholic_ep8.html) -- xxxHolic dealing with supernatural events means that there's a money's hand in it that grants wishes, just so you know.
If you want to see more, I could take a few scenes out of the episode, showing how it is tied and how it opens -- I could put those up on Youtube for you, if needed.

That is so cool! I am quite intrigues wqith the idea of making such an item at some point. Thanks for the links to the pictures!

And yes, I would like a couple more shots showing how it's tied and how it opens- while I think I have the general idea, the particulars- especially about how it's tied- are escaping me. :) Thank you!

I have to finish up the LED-driver for J's fashion-oriented project, but after that I will take a few clips from the episode so you can see it 'in action'.

That would be so great- thank you!!!

I am now starting to contemplate how to apply filigree in ways that are NOT in the book, so whenever you ahve a chance, I'd love to see it! I'm also quite fond of small containers, and the mechanism of this one looks very interesting indeed.
