While poor Fabio still is living in hois box, I got a bunch of other stuff done this weekend.

I made excellent progress on some commission work.

The gift piece I'm working on for a friend is heading toward completion. I decided that the bail was too off-center, so re-did it and now it's good. I then put it in the timbler for a bit for a pre-polish, and next need to polish the inside of the setting, since the stone is translucent; I will then "cure" it for an hour at 250F (or whatever the appropriate temp is), to pull up a germanium oxide coat on the argentium backing that will prevent it from tarnishing under the stone- and THEN, I can finish the puppy! :)

I also made a pendant wingnut, like my wingnut tie tacks/lapel pins on Etsy. I'm debating what color stone to put in it; right now I'm leaning to black onyx, for the noncommittal (plus, black and silver look so nice together!).

I had a bad seam on an Argentium mobius ring, so I cut that part out and re-soldered it- so I now have an extra Argentium silver ring. I've been playing with a different setting style for stones in this ring, and plan to use this one as a prototype/test piece; I want to be SURE the setting is secure before I offer it for sale!

I also played with a couple of experiemental pieces; once they get done, I'll probably put them up on Etsy.

And tomorrow- I should get Fabio's cabinet stand! and then we can figure out how, exactly, to mount the dude on it... Eep.

Fabio- my spendid new rolling mill- still reclines in his box, awaiting his new cabinet stand. Meanwhile he taunts me with his manual, which describes his many virtues. Sigh! :)

I do have to say a lot for Rio Grande's customer service, though. I emailed them about the lack of a key on Sunday night, and first thing Monday they called, and offered to either send us a new cabinet WITH keys, and to pay for us to return the old one, or to just send us a new lock and keys, and we could drill out the old lock. Since we've never drilled out a lock in our lives, and were concerned we'd damage the cabinet as we learned, we opted for the replacement- and they sent it that day; it's just that it takes a week to get across the country.

I am SO looking forward to working with this rolling mill! it's going to make a number of things I'm already doing a lot easier, AND enable me to do much, much more!

WOEZ!

We cannot erect Fabio until we have the key to his cabinet-stand.

And while we have lots of add-ons to that stand- they do not include THE KEY.

I will be calling Rio Grande tomorrow and whingeing about this.

I mean- sending a LOCKED CABINET and NOT sending the KEY??? Ridiculous!

Gold: Ouch!

Gold is now almost $1100US/troy ounce. Owie! Just for comparison, the very first time I bought gold I paid $373/ozt. for it. :)

J, my husband who keeps up with the finacial news more than I do, says it's likely to hit $1500. Double owie!

So: if you are thinking about getting something gold, now would probably be a better time than later.

And if you are contemplating commissioning something from me, now is defimnitely a good time; I just finished another commission, and am proceeding well with the rest, so I have some slots for new ones.

I'll just mention that once you put down the deposit and I buy the gold, the cost of the metal is locked in; no matter how pricey gold gets between my purchase of the metal for your piece and when your piece is done, the price doesn't go up. (That's partly why I need the deposit- to buy the metal! and once it's bought, of course, the cost is fixed.)

Also: I can has a Facebook!

Yes, I have been dragged kicking and screaming (OK, more like cussing) into the 21st century.

If you are on Facebook, you can see my brand-new page be searching for "AFMetalsmith". I will be doing my best to update it and add photos and other content as I can.

FABIO!!!!!

Fabio is here! Squee!

"Fabio" is what I am probably naming my new, utterly marvelous rolling mill. (I've been referring to this particular model as a "studly" rolling mill for years now, so when I decided he needed a name, both the people I mentioned this to immediately said "Fabio"- and so it is.)

Now, I am not yet able to actually SEE Fabio; he is encased in a sturdy wooden crate that allowed his 200+ pounds to make it across the country intact.

But- he's here! And I will try to get some pictures as we uncrate him and set him up (and EEP on the setting up bit- how are we going to lift 200 pounds onto a stand???)

Productive day today, despite it beeing Halloween and all. :)

I mailed off 3 things to the people who wanted them, and I made good progress on 3 wedding ring commissions, plus a bit of other stuff; I'll get progress photos of the latter tomorrow and send them to their respective people.

I'm really looking forward to habving more time for my own experiments, AND to update my sady neglected website!

Also: I am getting my dream rolling mill on Wednesday. While i don;t usually name tools, I think this dude needs a name; when I said that to 2 separate people, both suggested "Fabio" as their first impuls. So I think that's his name. :)

An excellent day in the studio today! I'm sending 3 things off tomorrow, plus I made good progress on 3 commissions- I forged out the metal for 2 of them, and soldered the third, then annealed all 3 so they're ready for the next step.

I also have 2 "project boxes" that are now EMPTY. (My project boxes are Altoids tins- they're such a great size for individual jewelry projects!) One will get that gift item put in it, but having one empty means I can start something NEW. While I am sorely tempted to do some sort of learning exercise- there's this highly elaborate, multiple-pivoting ring thing that was in a previous issue of Jewelry Artist and which I am really dying to make- I will probably be practical and begin work on one of my prototype ideas that I'd love to be able to sell for Xmas, or at least Valentine's Day.

Now that my commissions are mostly not overwhelming, I also need to do some serious work on my website. Like housework, website work is NEVER done! Top priorities: add some of the pics to the "new" gallery; add my much-better set of dedicated rings to my "about metals" info; and do an entire page on my various Mobius rings, that can then spawn links to individual variations. I'm also hoping to add info about gemds to the metals info, but that's probably a longer-term proposition; it shoudl probably have birthstone info, too.

Good day in the studio today, and yesterday, too! meaning, this morning I mailed off 2 finished pieces, and tomorrow I can mail off a third. This gets my commission list down to very manageable, so it's probably time to start trying to get more. :P

I've also been getting stuff done on a gift piece (which will remain secret until the recipient gets it), and the final scent locket- I worked out a different bail-catch technique for this one which seems to be working OK, so now all I need to do is make some pads, set it up in a box, and get a good photo or 2.

And as far as commissions go- yeah, I love doing them! But I also love working on some of my own stuff (and there's a pin for my mother-in-law that I need to get DONE before she visits over the Xmas holidays). So, if no more commissions are in the offing right now, that's cool; I can maybe finish up some of my long-ongoing projects, maybe start a new fun one or 2, and do some prototypes and Learning Experiences. Sounds like fun, either way. :)

Also, I'm very excited about a piece I am making as a surprise gift for a friend. (Although as it progresses, I start to get nervous that she'll hate it...) I found a really gorgeous stone for it, and am having pretty good success with curving wide domed wire fairly tightly around the setting; I got about halfway there yesterday, and will anneal and (I hope) finish it tomorrow. The wire needs a fair amount of shaping, too, since the ends need to taper while retaining at least something of the domed shape.

I'm figuring this latter will be good practice for me in making versions of antique rings; many of them use a MUCH higher dome than anything currently available. I'm contemplating how best to do that with materials and equipment available now...

Anyway-0 this gift piece isn't taking all that much time, but it's a lot of fun. I'll post a picture, or a link to a pic, once it's done and given to the recipient.

I got the stone on Etsy, by the way- it's a lovely rose quartz, somewhat occulded, with a star like a star sapphire visible in the right light. YUM. I think you can see it here, though the default picture doesn't really do it justice: http://www.etsy.com/view_transaction.php?transaction_id=17120816

I had an excellent day in the studio yesterday, though today was a bit meh. I did some work on some commissions, tweaked the fit of the fianl scent locket (so all it needs now is the finishing), etc.

I also unpacked my Rio order (NOT including the rolling mill!). I now have nicer boxes for fancy pendants, plus some nice but less-expensive boxes suitable for, say, 2+ Trinket Rings.

Also: the wherewithal to try out the new bronze PMC stuff- meaning a small package of it, plus a stainless steel covered box for firing it, plus 5 pounds each of 2 kinds of treated charcoal with which the vessel is filled- and the fork to get the box into and out of the kiln.

The fork came separately, since it's long and bulky. UPS did a fine job of mauling it, too, though J was able to put it back into shape. But when I was unpacking it, it seemed like there was something else in the box. Weird! So I opened the whole thing up- not that hard, since UPS had done at least half of that work for me- and lo! there was in it a totally random t-shirt. It is pink, with a cute cartoon of a tail-wagging dog on the from, labeled something like "Instant message"- it's not a Rio t-shirt or anything.

I am baffled by the shirt.

For the win!

I not only got my latest Rio order today- though I have not opened it and parceled stuff out- as usual, it's a mix of findings, tools, and packaging...

BUT! I finally ordered my dream, fabulous, studly rolling mill- all 200 pounds of it. :P

I have been intimidated by placing this order for a couple of weeks now, mostly because 1. lots of $$$; and 2. WAY heavy!

It seems that for an extra $40 (over unknown shipping), they will deliver it into the studio. That's worth it. They will not, however, set it up, so we're on our own for that bit.

I have no idea how much the shipping is going to cost; they're getting back to me on Monday about that. Whatever it is, though- we'll spend it, because this is THE rolling mill of dreams (unless you're a production facility that needs electrically-powered), and no one on the East Coast seems to carry it.

11:1 gear reduction ratio FOR THE WIN!!!!!

I'm obviously really excited about this. :) It will- once we manage to get it set up- be enormously useful for stuff I'm doing now, AND for much stuff that I WANT to be doing.

I am so pleased that I've done well enough this year to manage this!
afmetalsmith: (Default)
I've been mostly making progress on various commissions, so there's not been much to write about lately. For example, today I gor 1 DONE (except for the engraving), and 2 more with significant progress- all ready for photos to go to their people, and tomorrow I expect to do similarly...OK, maybe without anything getting DONE. :)

My big news is- if we can find a place that carries them, it looks like I can order my dream rolling mill! Woohoo! I have SO many things I want to do with it... It's the big Durston double-combination one, that'll roll a full 6-inch width flat on the top and has a bunch of wire-rolling options on the bottom and sides- and with an **11:1** gear reduction ration, my dears, on the flat. :) For contrast, my current one has a 4:1 GRR, and won't do stuff anything like as thick as this one will, which is causing me some angst and whingeing at the moment.

Oh, PLEASEpleaseplease...!

A very good day in the studio today!

I got K's ring soldred, and progress made on several more ring commissions.

Plus! I did most of the finishing and then the hardening on 3 of my 4 Scent Lockets, and have figured out a way to finish the 4th. The current ones still need some additional finishing, plus I should bake them at 250F for an hour or so to build up the protective coating... but they are indeed mostly DONE. Excellent!

This evening, if possible, I do have some photos to process, and either send to the people for whom I'm doing the work, or put together a webpage or 2 with them for my site, and/or for listing on Etsy.

Pretty productive day again today. OK, I ran into yet another problem with that commission scent locket- but I fixed it, and now it and its siblings have been pre-polished; I hope to finish the polishing and/or harden them all tomorrow, and then they will be DONE, or very close to.

Also worked on various rings, all commission, and put together a couple of pairs of Celtic earrings made from previously-done castings, one of which I have sold.

I did have some time to work on some of my own stuff: a gift pendant for a friend (since the stone is translucent, I decided to scrap the sterling backing I'd cut and go with Argentium instead; I will bring up the germanium oxide on it before setting the stone, so it won't tarnish); and a couple of pendants I've been prepping for resin inlay. My Sat. student is intrigued by inlay, so I've promised to save the actual inlaying part for next Sat. when she's here.

The pendants are 2 square-ish Dublin rose designs, one in bronze and one in silver. I know I'll use reds (bright and dark) for the silver one, but am undecided about the bronze; anyone have any color ideas that are better than that one to go with a golden-brown metal?

I got some good work done today- some work on wedding rings (of course!), and work on 3 scent lockets, one of which is a commission that's been giving me grief for a while now (for no particularly good reason; just a lot of bad luck).

Anyway! The SLs are in the kiln annealing preparatory to baking them again to harden them- they're Argentium, and this makes a lot of difference.

Other misc. bits, too, both commission and not, so all in all a good day.

I need to spend some time tomorrow doing online work stuff now- I've got some emails to answer, and a certain hoard of Anglo-Saxon jewelry to look at pictures of- I'm especially keen to see the enamels and the zoomorphs.

Im also hoping to continue to get commission work finished up, because I have several non-commission pieces I REALLY want to get working on- a couple of which would be great to have up for sale for Xmas, if I can manage it.

I've been busy lately! It's both due to necessity, and to the fall weather making me more ambitious; I LOVE fall- the weather's so nice (I like cool more than hot), plus we're heading into the Season of Holidays!

So: I've finished up several commissions that had been dragging on longer than I'd like- mostly because they were idiosyncratic, and thus I ran into problems that i don't tend to hit when I'm doing stuff I've done lots of times before. Still, all's well and they're done, and mostly sent off, and now I'm back to commissions with indiosyncratic variations on themes, but nothing quite as sui generis as the former ones.

In other words, I'm back in my comfort zone (except for some experiemental stuff I'm doing that's NOT commissions), and that is definitely more comfy.

Today I mostly did prep: I forged out and annealed a bunch of ring blanks, so they're all ready for the next step. (And it's cool enough that having the kiln on for an hour or so was attractive!)

Yesterday I got most of the 1 remaining not-ring commission done; I'll do the final soldering tomorrow, and then can start the finishing. I do have one more set of wedding rings to add to the queue, but they are gifts and are sterling silver, so that's pretty different from the others all gold and/or palladium). I would like to finish these gift rings soonish, though.

While things were annealing, I sorted through some of my in-process work on my bench. I'm going to finish some of these ASAP.
afmetalsmith: (Default)
Mostly I've been working to finish stuff up, and that mostly commissions. I've sent out a few things, and have several more close to ready to go.

I ended up kiln-annealing the "Viking knit" tube, and that worked; torch annealing left it pretty stiff. I haven't had a chance to start drawing it out, though. Maybe I should get a picture while it still looks pretty funky.

I certainly learned a lot doing this, and I'm sure if I do it again, it'll be a lot smoother and more regular. I'd also be tempted to do it in Argentium, since bracelets generally take quite a beating when worn. I'm anticipating here, though; I suspect the finishing will take at least as much hands-on time as the nallbinding itself.

I just got the current issue of "Glass on Metal," a magazine for enamelists. They have some GORGEOUS cover art! Bev Yokley is doing these amazing, lifelike pictures of critters- from pets to giraffes- in enamel. Not much info on the technique(s), but they remind me of the work of a couple of the fine enamelists I know here online. :)

Ouch! and also Ye gods!

Gold is up over $1000/oz again. OK, proportion-wise, that's not THAT much more than the middle to high $900s, but still.

Owie.
afmetalsmith: (Default)
While I had a good day in the studio today, and got lots of stuff done...

I think I am going to give up on trying to use the tack welder for anything silver. It is just NOT functional there.

Today I tried to tack jump rings onto several of my scent lockets, to position them for soldering. One was successful; one didn't damage the piece to badly when it failed, and the third did a number on the original. (For #3 I'm figuring out ways to use it anyway, with a different way of handling the catch/bail, but it's annoying!)

And even with #1- the success- the jump ring fell off before the solder flowed- and it's not even hard solder!

So I went back to the Old Ways with complicated jigging and careful positioning, and got the jobs done... but it's really too bad that the tack welder is such a failure with silver. Now: it HAS occasionally done wonders when I work with gold; but I'm really disappointed that nothing I do seems to make it useable with silver.

Still, the Old Ways did work, and I have several scent lockets ready for finishing now. Cool!
